Square Fees & Alternative

Square Fees in 2026: What You Really Pay (and a 0% Processing Alternative)

Square fees are a flat percentage plus a fixed amount on every card payment. On Square's free plan, that's 2.6% + 15¢ when you tap, dip or swipe, 3.3% + 30¢ online or by invoice, and 3.5% + 15¢ when you key in a card (rates checked on squareup.com, Oct 19, 2026).

Square is easy to start with, and there's no contract. But those fees come out of every sale. If you'd rather keep that money, dual pricing can bring your processing cost to 0%. Here's the math on both.

Square's fees at a glance (2026 rate table)

Square has three plans: Square Free, Square Plus and Square Premium. Your processing rate depends on the plan and on how the card is taken.

Payment typeSquare Free ($0/mo)Square Plus ($49/mo per location)Square Premium ($149/mo per location)

*Rates checked Oct 19, 2026 on Square's fees page, Square's fee help article and Square's pricing page. Square lists Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android at 2.6% + 15¢ on legacy plans; on the new plans it falls under "tap, dip, or swipe." Square says businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask about custom pricing. Rates can change, so check Square's site for the latest.

What Square fees cost you per month (worked examples)

Here's the formula: (card volume × percentage) + (number of transactions × fixed fee).

These examples are hypothetical. They use Square Free's in-person rate (2.6% + 15¢) and assume a $40 average sale.

Monthly card volumeTransactions ($40 avg)MathEstimated Square fees per monthPer year
    $10,000250$260 + $37.50$297.50$3,570
    $30,000750$780 + $112.50$892.50$10,710
    $75,0001,875$1,950 + $281.25$2,231.25$26,775

If more of your sales are online, invoiced or keyed in, your cost goes up, because those rates are higher. Paid plans lower the in-person rate but add $49 or $149 a month per location. At $10,000 a month, Square Plus would cost an estimated $336.50 ($250 + $37.50 + $49), which is more than Square Free.

Can you pass Square fees on to customers?

That's one of the most common questions, and the answer depends on how you do it. There are three different setups:

    • Surcharging adds a fee to credit card payments at checkout. Card brand rules cap it, it can't be added to debit cards, and some states restrict it.
    • Cash discount posts one price and gives a discount to customers who pay cash.
    • Dual pricing shows two prices, a cash price and a card price, before the sale. The customer picks how to pay.

These aren't the same thing, and the rules differ. See cash discount vs dual pricing vs surcharging and our credit card fee laws by state guide. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why Square declines or freezes some businesses

Square is an aggregator. Instead of underwriting each business up front, it signs up many businesses quickly under its own account and reviews risk as payments come in. That's why setup is fast, and it's also why some businesses get held, reviewed or closed later.

Common triggers are a spike in sales, chargebacks, or a business type on Square's restricted list (see Square's Seller Agreement for its current list). If that's happened to you, a high-risk merchant account with underwritten approval may be a better fit. More on this in why processors freeze funds.

How Pine's dual pricing program works

With our dual pricing program, every item has two prices: a cash price and a card price. The card price is designed to cover the cost of card acceptance, so your processing cost on card payments can drop to 0%. That applies to in-person, online and keyed-in card payments.

What a customer sees (example): a sandwich with a cash price of $10.00 and a card price of $10.40. Both prices are on the menu and the screen. Cash pays $10.00. Any card, credit or debit, pays $10.40. The customer chooses.

Doing it right matters. A clean setup means:

    • Both prices shown before the sale, on menus, shelf tags, quotes and online listings.
    • Signs at the entrance and at checkout. Grab our free cash discount signs.
    • A price difference that's reasonable and tied to your real card costs.
    • Signs that say "card price," not "credit card price," so debit customers know which price applies. The cash price is for cash only.
    • Receipts that match your signs.

We set it up on new Clover equipment with Clover's built-in feature (see Clover dual pricing). Equipment may be included depending on your monthly volume, for dual pricing accounts only. Most businesses are up and running within 72 hours after approval, with no setup fees or long-term contracts. Prefer one posted price? Look at our cash discount program. New to the idea? Using the hypothetical $30,000 example above, Square fees came to an estimated $892.50 a month. With dual pricing at 0% processing, most of that could stay with your business. Your real result depends on your volume, your card mix and how your program is set up. We don't promise a specific number.

    FAQ

How much does Square charge per transaction? On Square Free, it's 2.6% + 15¢ for tap, dip or swipe, 3.3% + 30¢ online or by invoice, and 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in cards. Square Plus and Premium lower the in-person and online rates but add a monthly fee. Rates checked on squareup.com on Oct 19, 2026.

Does Square have monthly fees? Square Free has no monthly fee. Square Plus is $49 a month per location and Square Premium is $149 a month per location, per Square's pricing page on Oct 19, 2026. Add-ons like kiosk or kitchen display apps cost extra.

Is Square cheaper than a merchant account? It depends on your volume and card mix. Square's flat rate is simple and works well for small or new businesses. As volume grows, interchange-plus pricing or dual pricing can cost less. Run your numbers in our savings calculator or send us a statement to compare.

Can I charge customers a fee for paying by card? Surcharging rules vary by state and card brand, and surcharges can't be added to debit cards. Dual pricing is a different setup: you post a cash price and a card price before the sale, with clear signs. Check our state-by-state guide; this isn't legal advice.

What is a good alternative to Square? It depends on your business. Dual pricing suits businesses that want to bring processing cost to 0%. Interchange-plus suits those who want transparent, cost-based pricing. A dedicated merchant account suits high-risk businesses that aggregators won't take.

Why did Square freeze or close my account? Common reasons include a risk review after a sales spike, a rise in chargebacks, or a business type on Square's restricted list. Aggregators approve quickly and review later. A dedicated, underwritten merchant account reviews your business up front instead.

Is dual pricing legal? Yes, when it's done right. Offering a lower price for cash has long been allowed under federal law. Both prices need to be shown clearly before the sale, with signs at the door and checkout, and card brand and state rules still apply. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I keep my Square hardware? No. Square hardware works with Square. Pine supplies new Clover equipment set up for dual pricing. Depending on your monthly volume, equipment may be included for dual pricing accounts only.

How fast can I switch from Square? Most businesses are up and running within 72 hours after approval. There are no setup fees or long-term contracts. Send a recent statement for a free review to get started, or call or text 786-383-1656.
