Credit Card Processing for Medical, Dental and Anesthesia Practices

Card processing fees can erode a practice's margin, especially on large self-pay balances, deductibles and procedure payments. We help medical, dental and anesthesia practices cut what they pay to accept cards, with a setup that fits how patients actually pay.

Why card fees hit practices harder than you think

    • Large balances. Self-pay procedures, deductibles, cosmetic cases and anesthesia fees mean high-dollar card transactions, and each one carries a percentage fee.
    • Card-heavy patients. Most patients pay with credit, debit, or HSA/FSA cards.
    • Opaque statements. Many practices are on bundled or tiered pricing and can't tell what they actually pay. (Here's how to read a processing statement.)
    • No time to shop. Physicians and office managers are busy taking care of patients, not comparing processors.

    Options for practices

    1. Dual pricing for posted self-pay prices. If your practice publishes self-pay or cosmetic price lists, dual pricing shows two prices: a cash price and a card price. For example, $10.00 cash / $10.40 card scales to any fee schedule. The card price applies to all card payments, credit and debit, and the cash price is for cash only. Customers who pay by card cover the processing cost, so your practice keeps more. Learn more about our dual pricing program or what dual pricing is.

    2. Clover at the front desk. Clover has dual pricing built in. New Clover equipment is included for dual pricing accounts, depending on volume. We configure it, provide signs for your check-in and checkout areas, and walk your front-desk team through a one-line explanation. See Clover dual pricing.

    3. ACH for larger balances. For surgical deposits, payment plans and B2B invoices (such as anesthesia groups billing surgery centers), we offer ACH solutions. We don't accept personal checks through our programs.

    4. Transparent standard processing. If dual pricing doesn't fit your patient population or payer contracts, we'll review your statement and recommend a cleaner pricing model instead. Here's how flat rate, tiered and interchange-plus compare.

Things to think through before you switch

    • Payer contracts. Dual pricing is for posted self-pay prices. Check your insurance and network agreements for anything that affects how you can price patient balances.
    • State rules. Florida law expressly allows cash discounts offered to all customers. Display both prices clearly before payment. Other states differ. Read Is It Legal to Charge a Credit Card Fee?.
    • Patient communication. Post signs at check-in, put both prices on estimates, and give your team one sentence to use.
    • Privacy. Card terminals shouldn't capture clinical information. Keep payment and clinical workflows separate.
